Alice Faye and John Callahan

I inherited these pages (or this page, front and back) from my late husband, John Callahan. He told me he collected him during his adolescence, back in the mid/late 50’s. He must have been a queen even as a kid, growing up on the lower-middle class side of the tracks, in Chelmsford, MA.

Alice Faye. Who the Hell was she? “The new sweetheart of America”.  Not “A”, but “THE”.

Manga Mermaid (With Calder)

The genesis of this piece was a drawing commissioned at L.A. Con 2018. The patron gave me the model of the mermaid he wanted, and an image of the Calder mobile sculpture in the back ground. I ran across the original sketch yesterday while searching my files and decided to play around with it. This is the result.

Namorita, From the Pages of The Submariner

This is Namorita. She's related somehow to Namor, the Submariner. I don't recall the nature of their relationship, and I don't care enough to research it. It's part of a series of erotic athletic drawings I've been doing, actually, since I got into superheroes as an adolescent. I discovered drawing superheroes was a way to draw nudes without getting in whatever trouble one might get into for drawing nudes.
My recent evolution/revelation/realization is that I don't have to draw superheroes anymore to draw heroic, athletic nude figures. In a way, today's drawing of Namorita is a throwback to my older aesthetic strategy, but I decided to run with it in this case. As it happens, I actually like this character, remembered fondly from Bill Everett's brief, early 70's stint on The Submariner.
