Gordon Bressack Memorial, 10.27.19, at Flappers Comedy Club and Restaurant

 “Gordon Bressack was born on May 28, 1951 in New York City, New York, USA as Gordon Joseph Bressack. He is known for his work on Pinky and the Brain (1995), My Pure Joy (2011) and Animaniacs (1993). He was married to Ellen Gerstell. He died on August 30, 2019 in Los Angeles, California, USA. (IMDb)”

He created, along with Rob Hudnut and Gary Hartle, “Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys”, a 26 half-hour animated series (about intelligent primates roaming the galaxy) that debuted in 1997. I met him when I came on board as one of the three directors on the series. He had an office at the Studio, Epoch Ink, and I interacted with him on an almost daily basis. As is often the case, we lost contact soon after production ended. 

His memorial was held at “Flappers Comedy Club and Restaurant” in the Media Center District of Burbank, California. There was a small stage at the far end of the narrow room. Attendees were invited to share remembrances about the departed comedy writer. Gordon’s son, Jimmy, his younger brother, Roger, and sister, Celia spoke, There was an awkward silence, so I stepped forward and related a couple of memories. Then I took my position on a stool to the right of the small 8’ x 6’ slightly raised “stage” and drew each speaker in turn. Here are my sketches.

Chinatown, Los Angeles, California, October 19, 2019

These sketches were done in about an hour and a half. I was it in a public courtyard, on Hill Street, across from Foo Chow’s a reasonably priced Chinese Restaurant famous for being a location used in the filming of “Rush Hour”, co-starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. The food, as it turns out, was pretty good too. I started drawing about 5:00 PM, as the light was waining. Before I finished, at 6:30, the Chinese Lanterns started lighting up. It was magical.

Self Publishing Bootcamp, IWOSC, IPBA 1011919

IWOSC (Independent Writers of Southern California) and IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) held “Self-Publishing Boot Camp For Authors” on October 19, 2019, at the Veterans Memorial Building, in Culver City California. This all-day workshop was led by Carla King and Sharon Goldinger, professional “Book Shepards”. This means they help authors bring their manuscripts to published form, indistinguishable from books, ebooks, and audio books published by main-stream brick and mortar publishers. Here are 4 drawings done during class, in those intermittent periods when I wasn’t feverishly taking notes.

Bill Morrison Goodbye Party, C.A.P.S. 10-10-19

Last night the membership of C.A.P.S. (Comic Art Professional Society) bid farewell to Bill and Kaer Morrison as they prepare to move to Detroit, Michigan, from whence they came 37 years ago. I did this sketch of Bill while he was regaling the membership of the couple's journey to this new stage of their life.
