This page is part of a set of 4 pages I adapted from a
storyboard I executed in 1990 for the TV Series “Long Ago and Far Away”.
I must have done these pages in 1991, as part of my ongoing,
unsuccessful attempts to break into mainstream comics after my graduation from
Art Center College of Design in 1983. I figured that these pages would allow me
to show off my ability to draw natural landscapes, pretty women, horses and
nocturnal weather conditions.
I found it galling that I was at the top of my game as a
storyboard artist, doing really excellent work, and would be treated like just
another fan-boy on the make at comic-book conventions. My pattern, up until I
was working on the Batman Animated TV series in 1991, was that I would do new
samples to show at each year’s San Diego Comic-Con, get summarily rejected, and
sulk for several months until it was time to work up new samples. These pages
were possibly done for the 1991 convention. Or 1990.
