The
character of “Scrub” was established in the ongoing series and used in the Dark
Horse Comics #14 & #15. To get reference, I rented the laser disc of “Time
Bandits” and spent an evening doing quick sketches of the various dwarves in
that movie. As with the freaks in DHC 14 & 15, and the last couple pages of
this issue, I found the depictions in the ongoing series useless in doing my
own designs. It is difficult for me to explain why at this point; the only
issue of the original series I kept was the one drawn by Tony Salmons.
Co-incidentally,
Scrub ended up looking unexpectedly a lot like my late friend, Dave Simons.
Both he and I go a laugh off that. Dave was an excellent comic book inker and occasional
penciller for Marvel and DC in the late 70’s/early 80’s before he moved to LA
and started toiling in the TV animation biz as a storyboard artist, which is
how I met him. This is a page of Dave
Simons original artwork that I own, from Bizarre Adventures 33, published
by Marvel Comics in 1982.
This is page 12 for "The Mark" issue 4,
volume 2, otherwise known as "The Mark In America", published by Dark
Horse Comics in March 1994. Written by Mike Barr, Drawn by Brad Rader
Previous pages from “The
Mark in America” are archived on the blog page of my website, www.raderofthelostart.com
