This piece was pencilled by John Severin and inked by Will Elder, from Two Fisted Tales #26. It was published in the early 50’s before the Comic Code was imposed on the industry, and Elder and Harvy Kurtzman created Mad Comics (later magazine). This is another uncharacteristic page for Elder, who worked as a humorist for most of his long career. I think I bought it for the panel with the tank tread in the bg, panel 4. I'm in awe of the way he keeps it in the background, behind the 2 foreground figures as they rise from their interrupted game of checkers. The remaining 3 panels are great as well, textbook examples of how to keep the background elements clearly separated from the foreground. Elder seems to be working mostly with brush; what control.
