NIGHT ON BALLED MOUNTAIN

In honor of Halloween, I'm posting a drawing I finished on the evening of September 11, 2001. I'd been working on it for a while, over 10 years in fact. I had originally intended it to be part of the "Free Art" series of drawing the were displayed at A Different Light in Silverlake back in 1991, but couldn't figure out how to design the cavorting demons. Then, in the summer of 2001,  I acquired a catalogue for Mr. S., a retailer of leather/bondage equipment and was duly inspired. But the events of that morning inspired me to finish the work. As with the other "Free Art" drawings, it is done on a full 30 x 40" sheet of 3 ply cold press Strathmore art paper. It's still for sale, framed, in case someone wants to buy it.

Oh boy, we're almost halfway finished! This drawing is a swipe from Gil Kane; I felt like drawing women so I switched Thor and Pluto out for the Valkyrie and Thundra. I'm posting both for your edification.

I don't have much to say about this one. Unlike the last couple day's drawings this one was really difficult. Oh well, I guess it can't always be easy...

Batman, done in the style of Jack Kirby sort of. As much as I could without actually having a Kirby drawing in front of me while I was working. It doesn't have any of the characteristic Kirby muscle-squiggles; the anatomical forms aren't as abstracted as Kirby. I regret that this is as close as I can come without swiping; Kirby's abstractions are alien to me. All I can do is push the size relationships, and, when it seems appropriate, distort the forms.

This drawing is very much like Day 11's only much simpler. Simpler is better. I'm trying to figure out how to simplify. Simple looks easy but it isn't. Sometimes it is, though; this drawing was easy, an afterthought. I just whipped it out in 5 minutes, if that. So I don't appreciate it, don't value it, which is nuts since I tell myself that's what I'm striving for. Go figure.

More Wonderwoman. It's weird that I like drawing her since I mostly have never read or much enjoyed (when I have) reading her comics. There's something perverse about her whole set-up, and not in a hip, self-aware way like Alan Moore's Supreme comics. I don't know what I'd do with her in the unlikely event that I was given carte blanche to make her over. I think the first thing I'd do is re-visit her brief powerless period in the late 60's -early 70's, when she wore nothing but white and hung out with I Ching. Get some closure on that era since it was ended with extreme unceremonialness by Robert Kanigher when he re-acquired the reins to the character in early '73.
Sigh... Anyway, this drawing is probably incorrect, since I think WW can't actually fly which is why she has the invisible plane.

Wonderwoman head shots, as though for an animation model sheet. I based these off of the actress Capucine. The first drawing looks more like the actress but I like the second, simpler drawing better.

Another drawing of Wonderwoman strutting her superhero stuff. Sexy yet dynamic, assertive, if I do say so myself.

My Wonderwoman streak continues. This time it's her alter ego, Diana Prince, who, as I recall. was a member of the American armed forces. I find that rather perverse, somehow.

This is a photo I snapped on Monday, October 5, of the graphitti wall at Bento Box Entertainment in Burbank, where I work. It's a marker drawing I did last year of Louise as a werewolf. Louise is a character in "Bob's Burgers", the animated TV series I've worked on as as storyboard artist for the past 6 years. Has it really been that long? It must be; Season 6 premiered last Sunday.

In truth, I drew this on October 3, while tabling at the Tom of Finland Art & Culture Festival, right after I did the SM demon posted yesterday. It's my version of Miss Piggy. Again, I was inspired by the mostly gay men in leather and other outre costumes filing past my table proclaiming their almost militant individuality of presentation and body type. No matter how weird they looked, they were sexy and KNEW it, damn it. That put me in mind of the porcine muppet and how, logically speaking, she should have 3 sets of tits, and that it would never occur to her that this might make her seem unsexy to close-minded humanl-centrics.

This is October, named by my Facebook friends "Inktober". I've gotten into the spirit of things, on Facebook anyway, and realized I'm being remiss in not sharing these drawings in my long-inactive blog. So here goes, the drawings I posted on October 2. More will follow in subsequent days.
